The Story: Anthem Vessel

“There is a crack in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” — Leonard Cohen

Once a candle that gave light, this vessel lived for many months on my family’s counter. Its glow accompanied our early mornings: those hurried, chaotic hours of coffee brewing, backpacks zipping, and little feet, quickly growing, finding shoes. The candle’s warmth anchored us, marking the rhythm of ordinary grace.

When I decided to repurpose it, I overheated the glass while cleaning and watched the paint finish crackle across the surface. For a moment, I felt frustrated. Something lovely seemed ruined. But then I remembered: the beauty is in the imperfection. So instead of hiding the cracks, I turned them forward. They became part of the story.

This piece is planted with a woody tassel, a plant known for its soft texture and strength. Its roots rest in a custom Restoried soil blend, created for breathability, nourishment, and balance, supporting life where there once was only soot and wax. The vessel now carries green instead of flame, reminding us that the light of renewal takes many forms.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light or filtered morning sun.

  • Water: Lightly moisten soil every 10–14 days, allowing the surface to dry between waterings. (Less in winter.) *Notice there is no drain hole in the bottom.

  • Environment: Room temperature; avoid extreme heat or cold.

  • Top Dressing: Natural pebbles help retain gentle moisture and add beauty. Refresh as needed.

  • Encouragement: If you see surface condensation, air the container for a day to keep roots healthy.

Reminder

The visible cracks and soft greenery together tell a story: that life is not perfect, but it is profoundly good. Like this vessel, we are shaped, softened, and remade through both warmth and time.

“He has made everything beautiful in its time.” — Ecclesiastes 3:11

I prayed over this vessel and for you, the person holding it now. May it remind you that beauty can rise again in unexpected ways, and may God bless whatever is on your heart today.

With you in the soil and the story,

Ellie

A Living Story Disclaimer
Each Restoried Garden begins its journey in my hands but continues its story with you. Every vessel has been cleaned, prepared, and planted with care; however, once it leaves my garden, its life depends on your unique environment and tending. Please note that weather, watering, and placement all influence longevity, and I cannot be responsible for plant performance or wear over time. These pieces are meant to live, grow, and change, a reflection that no story truly ends; it simply takes root somewhere new.
